The Mathematics of Names in Numerology

Numerology name analysis converts the full birth name into three numbers using the Pythagorean table: Expression (all letters), Soul Urge (vowels only), and Personality (consonants only). Learn the exact formula with worked examples.

The Principle of Name Numerology

The Pythagorean system assigns each letter of the alphabet a numerical value from 1 to 9 in sequence. This allows any name to be converted into a sequence of values that, when summed and reduced, produce a unique number.

The full birth name generates three distinct numbers based on which letters are included in the calculation:

| Number | Letters used | Description | |--------|-------------|-------------| | Expression | All letters | Communication profile and abilities | | Soul Urge | Vowels only | Internal motivations | | Personality | Consonants only | External impression |

The Pythagorean Assignment Table

| Value | Letters | |-------|---------| | 1 | A, J, S | | 2 | B, K, T | | 3 | C, L, U | | 4 | D, M, V | | 5 | E, N, W | | 6 | F, O, X | | 7 | G, P, Y | | 8 | H, Q, Z | | 9 | I, R |

Note: Y is treated as a consonant (value 7) in the standard Pythagorean system.

Expression Number: All Letters

The Expression Number is obtained by summing the values of all letters in the full name and reducing the result.

Describes: how a person communicates, their natural abilities, and the impression they generate in professional and social environments.

Example with the name "ANNA TORRES":

A-N-N-A T-O-R-R-E-S

| Letter | Value | |--------|-------| | A | 1 | | N | 5 | | N | 5 | | A | 1 | | T | 2 | | O | 6 | | R | 9 | | R | 9 | | E | 5 | | S | 1 |

Sum: 1+5+5+1+2+6+9+9+5+1 = 44 Reduction: 4+4 = 8

Expression: 8

Soul Urge: Vowels Only

The Soul Urge is obtained by summing only the values of the vowels in the full name.

Describes: internal motivations, what a person seeks privately, and the emotional needs that guide their decisions when there are no external pressures.

Example with "ANNA TORRES":

Vowels in the name: A, A, O, E (N, N, T, R, R, S are consonants)

| Vowel | Value | |-------|-------| | A | 1 | | A | 1 | | O | 6 | | E | 5 |

Sum: 1+1+6+5 = 13 Reduction: 1+3 = 4

Soul Urge: 4

Personality Number: Consonants Only

The Personality Number is obtained by summing only the values of the consonants in the full name.

Describes: the initial impression a person projects before being known in depth. It is the external interface of the profile.

Example with "ANNA TORRES":

Consonants in the name: N, N, T, R, R, S

| Consonant | Value | |-----------|-------| | N | 5 | | N | 5 | | T | 2 | | R | 9 | | R | 9 | | S | 1 |

Sum: 5+5+2+9+9+1 = 31 Reduction: 3+1 = 4

Personality: 4

Verification: The Relationship Between the Three Numbers

The three name numbers are mathematically related:

Expression total = Soul Urge sub-total + Personality sub-total (before final reduction)

Using the "ANNA TORRES" example:

  • Vowels: 1+1+6+5 = 13
  • Consonants: 5+5+2+9+9+1 = 31
  • Total: 13+31 = 44 → 4+4 = 8 ✓ (matches the Expression)

This relationship allows you to verify the calculation: if the sum of the sub-totals doesn't match the total sum of all letters, there is an error in the vowel-consonant separation.

Which Name to Use

The Pythagorean system uses the full name from the birth certificate as input data:

  • All first names (not just the first)
  • All surnames
  • No abbreviations
  • No nicknames or stage names

Middle names and compound surnames are always included. The birth certificate is the authoritative reference.

Calculate Your Name Numbers

The Name Analysis calculator applies the Pythagorean table automatically, separates vowels and consonants, and displays all three results (Expression, Soul Urge, Personality) with a letter-by-letter breakdown. No manual calculation required.

Frequently asked questions

Which name is used to calculate the name numbers?

The full name as it appears on the birth certificate: first name(s) and all surnames. Nicknames, changed names, stage names, and abbreviated versions are not used. The birth certificate is the standard data source in the Pythagorean system.

What are the vowels in name numerology?

The vowels are A, E, I, O, U. In the standard Pythagorean system, Y is treated as a consonant (value 7). All letters that are not vowels are consonants.

Why are there three different numbers from the same name?

Because each number filters a different layer: Expression uses all letters (full communication profile), Soul Urge uses only vowels (internal motivations), Personality uses only consonants (external impression). Each filter produces a different result from the same name.

Does my number change if I change my name?

The standard Pythagorean system uses the birth certificate name as a fixed reference. A legal name change produces different values, but the tradition establishes that the original name is most relevant for the static profile. The platform allows calculating both.

Can I verify my calculation?

Yes. The sum of the vowel sub-total and the consonant sub-total must equal the total sum of all letter values before any reduction. This arithmetic check confirms the vowel-consonant separation was done correctly.
